We love to remind our clients that your outdoor space deserves just as much love as the inside of your home. Whether it’s your front porch, back patio, or a tiny balcony, it should feel like a natural extension of your living space. It’s where cozy afternoons, casual dinners, and impromptu get togethers happen, so why not make it feel just as intentional?

From comfy cushions and layered rugs to mood lighting and potted plants, even a few small updates can completely change how your space looks and feels. With warmer weather on the way, now’s the perfect time to give your outdoor area a little refresh.

Here are some simple ways to get started:

1. Consider the Sun’s Path

One of the most overlooked elements in outdoor design is understanding how the sun hits your space throughout the day. This affects everything from where you place furniture to the type of shade solutions you need like an umbrella, pergola, or outdoor curtains to block those harsh afternoon rays and keep your seating area cool and inviting.

Equally important is protecting your furniture from the elements. Whether it's pollen season, sudden rain, or intense UV exposure, investing in covers or weather-resistant materials can extend the life of your outdoor pieces. Every region has its own set of climate challenges, so be sure to do your research and design with your specific environment in mind, your future self (and your furniture) will thank you.

2. Switch Out Your Cushions

If your outdoor furniture is looking old or worn out, a lot of times it's just the seat cushions that need some tender loving care.  Think about giving them a deep cleaning or consider replacing them for an instant refresh.  We recently replaced the cushions for a client's porch furniture and the set now looks brand new!

3. Add Ambiance with Lanterns & Lighting

Lighting transforms a space, and the outdoors are no exception. Incorporate decorative lanterns with LED or battery-operated candles for a soft, romantic glow—without the fire hazard. Opt for cordless options to keep things tidy and flexible, especially in lounge or dining areas. The cordless lamp market has exploded and there are so many fun options out there now. Just make sure any lighting you choose is weather-resistant so it can handle the elements year-round or bring indoors when not in use to truly protect the finish and keep the finish looking fresh and new. String lights are also a great way to define the space and extend its use into the evening hours.

4. Bring in Greenery

Plants are one of the easiest ways to breathe life into an outdoor space. From large potted palms to hanging baskets or a mix of herbs and flowers, greenery softens hard surfaces and makes the space feel curated and cozy. Bonus points for low-maintenance varieties that thrive in your local climate.

5. Layer with Pillows, Textures & Accessories

Think of your outdoor space like an extension of your living room,  adding throw pillows, rugs, throws, and accessories can instantly elevate both comfort and style. Outdoor pillows are a simple yet impactful way to refresh a space, and layering in elements like side tables, decorative trays, citronella torches, or even a compact fire pit adds personality and practicality.

Just be sure everything you choose is designed to withstand the elements. Many outdoor items come with fine print like “store in a covered area during inclement weather.” For uncovered areas, look for accent tables with slats or drainage holes, and choose water-repellent fabrics — or consider treating your textiles with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) for extra protection. That way, your space stays cozy and beautiful, even when surprise summer storms roll in.

6. Choose Multifunctional Accent Pieces

Select decor that does double duty! Think storage benches that hold outdoor cushions, stools that act as both seating and side tables, or ottomans that provide extra comfort and hidden storage. These multifunctional pieces are especially helpful in maximizing small spaces while keeping your layout stylish and uncluttered.

7. Patio & Table Umbrellas

Umbrellas are having their day with so many cute patterns, shapes and design elements (scalloped edges, double-tiered, fringe) out there now.  Gone are the days of the boring solid color umbrellas in only a few fabric options.  Select an umbrella with hardware that is meant to withstand the elements.  A lot of the less expensive umbrellas look beautiful but beware the hardware will rust and damage over time.  Consider a tilt option to better block the traveling sun during the day.  Make sure the umbrella is easily operable as many of the lesser expensive options can be difficult to open and close.
